SUMMER CHAMBER MUSIC WORKSHOP. Founded in 1990, the summer session of the Sacramento Youth Symphony’s Chamber Music Workshop offers an intensive week of ensemble playing, introducing young musicians, ages 7-12 (week 1) and 11-19 (week 2), to chamber music literature and rehearsal techniques. This program offers individualized coaching with professionals in the performance field, as well as a recital including all participants at the conclusion of the Workshop.
2010 Schedule
This half-day preparatory program is suitable for string students ages 7-12, offering a technique class, small ensemble coaching and string orchestra rehearsals. A mentoring program will be in place for advanced students who will spend the morning assisting with the preparatory program and the afternoons in side-by-side sight-reading sessions with faculty artists.
Week I, July 5-9 – Mentor Program, St. Anthony Church
This program will accept 8 advanced string students who will assist the coaching staff during warm-up, technique and chamber music coaching sessions, as well as playing side-by-side with the Preparatory students in their chamber orchestra.
Mentoring of younger players will take place during the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. each day. Monday – Thursday from 2:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., there will be sight-reading sessions with coaches and Mentors. Mentors will participate in a performance on Wednesday, July 7, 2010 at Westminster Presbyterian Church, Music at Noon Concert Series. On Friday at 1:00 p.m. there will be an end-of-session performance of the preparatory student string ensemble. All Mentors will be expected to participate in this performance.
The Sac State Music Department provides the ideal setting for the Sacramento Youth Symphony’s Chamber Music Workshop, Week 2. This program is suitable for ages ranging from 11-19 with at least two years of experience on their primary musical instrument. Instruments accepted into this program are violin, viola, cello, string bass, piano, flute, clarinet, oboe, bassoon, french horn & harp. Brass players will be accepted only if at least four brass participants register for the program. If you are a brass player, please submit your application but do not send payment until contacted by SYS to let you know if the minimum number was met.
Students are grouped into trios, quartets and quintets according to age and musical proficiency. These groups are coached in rehearsal and performance techniques and are taught how to work independently on musical interpretation and general ensemble playing. There are three string orchestra levels, with placement determined by age and skill level. All students have the opportunity to perform with their chamber groups and in the festive “Concert in the Courtyard.”
A limited number of scholarships are available, as well as tuition assistance for those who qualify.
